What is Electional Astrology?

Electional astrology is one of the oldest branches of astrology, used to choose the most optimal date and time for starting important activities. Unlike natal astrology (which reads the birth chart) or horary astrology (which answers specific questions), electional astrology looks forward and chooses the moment when celestial bodies are in the most favorable position for your goal.

Ancient rulers consulted astrologers before coronations, battles, and marriages. Today, electional astrology can help you choose a date for a wedding, business launch, surgery, contract signing, real estate purchase, and many other life decisions.

General Rules of Electional Astrology

Regardless of category, there are universal rules that apply to all electional charts:

• The Moon phase is the most important factor. The New Moon is ideal for new beginnings. The Waxing Moon (from new to full) supports growth. The Waning Moon (from full to new) is better for finishing, cleansing, and letting go. The Full Moon brings culmination.
• Avoid Void of Course Moon (VOC). When the Moon makes no aspects before leaving its sign, activities started during this period rarely produce expected results.
• Check retrogrades. Retrograde planets bring revision and repetition. Mercury retrograde affects communication and contracts. Venus retrograde affects love and finances. Mars retrograde affects energy and initiative.
• Moon aspects. The last aspect the Moon makes before leaving its sign gives an indication of the outcome. A trine or sextile with benefic planets (Jupiter, Venus) is ideal.
• Electional chart Ascendant. If you are choosing an exact time, the Ascendant of the electional chart should be in a sign that supports your goal.
