Composite Chart
The chart that represents the relationship itself — the energy you create together
What is a Composite Chart?
While synastry compares two charts to show how two individuals relate to each other, the composite chart goes a step further — it creates an entirely new chart that represents the relationship itself as an entity. Think of the relationship as a third person born when two souls come together. The composite chart is the natal chart of that "third person."
The technique was developed in the mid-20th century by astrologer John Townley and popularized by Robert Hand in his landmark book "Planets in Composite" (1975). Today it is a standard tool in every serious astrological practice.
How It Is Calculated
The composite chart is formed by finding the midpoints between the same planets in two natal charts:
- The midpoint between two Suns becomes the composite Sun
- The midpoint between two Moons becomes the composite Moon
- The same applies to Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, Pluto
- The midpoint between two Ascendants becomes the composite Ascendant
- The MC (Midheaven) is calculated the same way
The result is a unique chart with its own planetary positions, houses, and aspects — a chart that speaks to the nature, purpose, and challenges of the relationship itself.
Composite vs. Synastry — The Key Difference
Synastry answers the question: "How do we two relate to each other?" The composite chart answers: "What is our relationship? What is its purpose?" Both techniques are complementary, and professional astrologers use them together for a complete picture of a relationship.
For example, synastry may show intense attraction (Venus-Mars aspects), but the composite reveals whether the relationship has the structure for longevity (strong Saturn) or a spiritual purpose (prominent Neptune or North Node).
Interpreting the Composite Chart
Each planet, house, and aspect in the composite speaks to a specific dimension of your relationship:
- Composite Sun — The essence of the relationship. The sign and house show what lies at the heart of your connection and where it shines brightest. Sun in the 5th house points to a creative, fun relationship. In the 10th — a relationship focused on shared goals and public recognition.
- Composite Moon — The emotional climate. How you feel together, the atmosphere of your shared home, how emotionally secure you are with each other.
- Composite Venus — Love and values. How you express affection, what you value in the relationship, how much you enjoy being together.
- Composite Mars — Energy and conflict. How you handle differences, how active and dynamic the relationship is, where arguments arise.
- Composite Saturn — Structure and endurance. A strong Saturn indicates a lasting relationship that requires work. A weak Saturn may mean the relationship lacks enough "glue."
- Composite Neptune — Romantic ideals and illusions. High Neptune brings magic but also the risk of self-deception.
Houses in the Composite Chart
Houses reveal the life areas where the relationship's energy manifests most strongly:
- 1st house — How others see you as a couple. Your shared identity.
- 4th house — Home and family. The foundation of your relationship.
- 5th house — Creativity, children, fun, romance.
- 7th house — Partnership in its purest form. The balance of giving and receiving.
- 8th house — Intimacy, shared finances, transformation.
- 10th house — The couple's public image, shared career, and ambitions.

Example Composite Chart Interpretation
Composite Sun in Libra, 7th House — This is a relationship literally made for partnership. Libra is the sign of balance and harmony, and the 7th house is the natural house of partnerships. This couple functions best when together — alone, they feel incomplete. Diplomacy, compromise, and aesthetics form the foundation of their bond. The danger lies in avoiding conflict at all costs.
Composite Moon in Cancer, 4th House — Emotional security is the heart of this relationship. This couple creates a warm, safe home that becomes a refuge from the outside world. Family and tradition are deeply important to them. The Moon in its domicile and house brings profound emotional connection and intuitive understanding of each other's needs.
Composite Saturn conjunct Sun — This is a karmic relationship with a serious purpose. Saturn brings responsibility, structure, and challenges that test the couple's endurance. This relationship is not easy — but it is built to last. Couples with this aspect often go through difficult periods that ultimately strengthen them.
