What Are Decans?

In astrology, each zodiac sign occupies 30 degrees of the 360-degree zodiac wheel. These 30 degrees are further divided into three segments of 10 degrees each, called decans (or decanates). Each decan is influenced by a sub-ruling planet drawn from the other signs of the same element, creating three distinct "flavors" within each sign.

The first decan (0-10°) is ruled by the sign's own planet, making it the purest expression. The second decan (10-20°) takes its sub-ruler from the next sign of the same element. The third decan (20-30°) draws from the third sign of the same element. This system helps explain why two people of the same sign can have noticeably different personalities.
